“Encaustic Aspens & Oaks” Encaustic workshop SAC (Oct 2020)

Yes!  This is the workshop where we will be working towards one final painting!  The composition will be simple so you will have the opportunity to explore the nuances of working large without getting over complicated.  As for inspiration you may absolutely come with an idea – I encourage you to keep it simple.  I will be demonstrating a very basic composition – a tree in a field. We will be using a limited muted color palette and working with larger brushes.  This is the class we’re we dive further into composition and layering to create depth.  We will practice more translucent layering for softness as well.  Here are the 5 specialty colors we will be using (they are delicious…):
  • Olive Yellow
  • Alizarin Orange
  • Cerulean Grey
  • Blue Ochre
  • Green Gold Ex. Pale
  • Titanium White
In class we are going to practice fusing BIG.   You have your choice of panel size – keep your panel size to no smaller than 4sq/ft and no larger than 6sq/ft.  Size examples:  24 x 24 / 18 x24 / 12 x 36 / 24 x 30.  There is a big difference when you start working in larger formats so we will be getting comfortable with starting large pieces.  Getting that perfect surface large scale is a challenge and we will get that under our belts…
  • Color mixing to create form:   Learn color combo’s to depict soft landscapes and tree form.  Explore mixing your own colors instead of painting straight from the “tube”.
  • Transparent & opaque layering:  We will practice how to achieve layers of depth – one of the most alluring aspects of encaustic art.
  • Creating a cohesive composition:  Move past the melted rainbow tie-die backgrounds!   We will discuss how to bring all the elements together into a painting that works.
Of course there will be lecture/demos throughout each day with time to practice the techniques.

So what is included in the workshop?

  • R&F Encaustic Paint:  we will be using a limited palette of 5 specialty colors
  • R&F Encaustic Medium:  I’ve got the medium melted and ready to go!
  • Tools:  Brushes, incising tools, scrapers, rubber tools, etc….
  • The Heat:  Iwatani torches are available for you to use.
  • Safe working environment:  Limited seating offers you elbow room to spread out.  You get a whole table to yourself!  Galvanized sheet metal at each table provides a safe work space.  And oh yes, the classroom is ventilated!

Most of the materials are included but I am including a small list of things you should bring as well:

  • 1 cradled birch panel (American Easel brand recommended) size options: 24 x 24 / 18 x24 / 12 x 36 / 24 x 30
    • NO CANVAS BOARDS OR STRETCHED CANVAS, NO MASONITE, NO PLYWOOD, NOTHING GESSOED WITH ACRYLIC GESSO
    • Boards are available for purchase in the store if needed
  • Bottled water, snacks and lunch (It is very important to hydrate yourself with encaustic)
    • I ask students to please eat outside of the classroom to get some fresh air. Drinks are fine inside the classroom.  There is a Starbucks across the street and restaurants within walking distance from the store.
  • Notebook & pencil for taking notes
  • Appropriate attire and a great attitude: long hair tied back in ponytail, no flip flops, avoid loose-fitting “flowy” clothes.  Be prepared to learn and have fun!

“Landscape Lab” Acrylic workshop SAC (May 2020)

ALL MATERIALS INCLUDED!

We are always surrounded by landscape.  The picturesque views of the mountains, oceans, or rolling hills of California only describe a few.  The question is, how do we translate three dimensional LIFE into a two dimensional PAINTING?  This half-day workshop is designed to help keep the elements of the landscape simple and attainable.  By focusing color, brushstroke, and shape we will practice building elements commonly found in the landscape surrounding us.  The wonderful secret to this workshop is that the techniques learned are applicable in ANY subject matter and not just limited to landscape.  For instance, the brushstroke to create grass might also be used to paint fur.  The process of building 3D form in a tree’s foliage is also applicable for how one might paint a cloud; and the color used for bark has countless other possibilities. This workshop will focus on how to create simplified landscape elements with an emphasis on trees/shrubs, lush grass/dried grass, and earth tone color mixes.  There will be short lectures and demonstrations throughout the day covering layering, brush / line-work and color-mixing along with time to practice the demonstrated technique.

We will be working on multiple small studies and samples instead of working towards one completed painting.

Some of the topics covered in this workshop are:

  • Picking Your Paint & Landscape Color Mixing:  Understand the impact of color choice and how it effects an overall mood.
  • Sketching with Paint:  Keeping it loose and then add details with layers
  • Brush Action:  Learn about the different brush shapes and what they do.  Practice different brush strokes and line work.  Experiment with dry brush and scumbling.
  • Proper Paint Application:  How to load your brush and control how much paint is on your brush.
  • Achieving Depth in a Landscape:  Foreground, middle ground, background:  How to make areas appear distant and emphasize elements that are close.

All levels welcome!  This workshop is a great introduction to acrylic for the beginner.   More advanced artists can fine tune their skills and really push themselves.  The class environment is always open and supportive to whatever skill level you are at.

ALL MATERIALS ARE INCLUDED! WHAAA!?

Participants will be supplied with:

Artist-Grade “GOLDEN” brand acrylics and Matte Medium
“Canvasette” Sheets (if you already have a “Mixed Media” sketchbook that you would like to work in feel free to bring it!)
Brushes
Palette Paper
Paper Towels & Water Container

Since this is a half day workshop there will be a short break mid-workshop.  Feel free to bring water and snacks to keep you comfortable.
