We are always surrounded by landscape. The picturesque views of the mountains, oceans, or rolling hills of California only describe a few. Finding inspiration in the urban and industrial landscape opens up a whole new avenue of creative painting. Color, pattern, and shape translate from mother nature into human-made structure. This workshop will focus on how to create a simplified urban landscape of a receding city by exploring color, pattern and shape. Fall in love with customized rich and subtle greys to emphasize your own concrete jungle. There will be short lectures and demonstrations throughout the day covering layering, brush / line-work and color-mixing along with time to practice the demonstrated technique.
We will be working in a loose style on multiple small paintings (ranging from 4×6 – 8×10) instead of working towards one completed painting.
Some of the topics covered in this workshop are:
- Picking Your Paint: Understand the impact of color choice and how it effects an overall mood.
- Brush Action: Learn about the different brush shapes and what they do. Practice different brush strokes and line work. Experiment with dry brush and scumbling.
- Proper Paint Application: How to load your brush and control how much paint is on your brush.
- Tools: Familiarize yourself with different tools that can ease the painting process. Learn how to keep your palette organized and how to use a palette knife.
