Since the original work was done on a 16 x 20 panel I decided to work on a 16 x 20 Ampersand EncausticBord. I prime the surface with a thin layer of wax medium and fuse. “Fusing” is heating the layer of wax so it really grips the board’s surface. I lightly trace Mr. Parish’s composition with tracing paper, rub graphite on the reverse side of the tracing paper and transfer the image onto the wax. I then use India ink to reinforce the graphite lines. Another isolation coat of wax medium is applied and fused. You can see in the close-up photo that a rough surface can be fused back to smooth with controlled heat.
