“Intro to Encaustic” Encaustic workshop July 20

July 20, 2017 @ 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL (will be repeated October 26th)

Tide Pool

Welcome to the wonderful world of wax!

This is going to be an exciting hands-on introduction to the most magical of mediums: encaustic.  In this 1-day workshop we will be covering the basics of encaustic painting including information about materials, tools, safety and studio set-up. This workshop is limited to only six students so you will have plenty of one-on-one support. We will not be working towards a “completed painting” in this workshop; the emphasis will be on familiarizing ourselves with the application of the wax by creating multiple sample boards.  In addition to having painted a handful of encaustic creations, you will walk away with an understanding of why this medium is so alluring (and I warn you, addicting!)

There will be a 45-minute meal break mid-workshop.

JazzMost of the materials are included but I am including a small list of things you should bring as well:

  • 4 boards of various sizes (around 5×7 or 6×6 is ideal.  You may bring 1 larger panel 8×10 or 8×8)
    • Ampersand EncausticBords are good, so are cradled birch panels
    • Additional boards are available for purchase in the store if needed
  • Bottled water, snacks and lunch (It is very important to hydrate yourself with encaustic)
    • I ask students to please eat outside of the classroom to get some fresh air. Drinks are fine inside the classroom.
  • Notebook & pencil for taking notes
  • A few disposable rags (old ripped up t-shirts are good)
  • Appropriate attire and a great attitude:  long hair tied back in ponytail, no flip flops, avoid loose-fitting “flowy” clothes.  Be prepared to learn and have fun!

How to stay cool in the classroom:

It can get pretty toasty in the classroom during the summer.  Even though we have air conditioning, sometimes it’s not as cool as we would like so here are some tips to keep cool in class!

  • Wear clothes that are comfortable and can “breathe” – this includes shoes.  When your feet are cool, your body feels a little cooler (avoid flip flops or any shoes that you might trip on.  Sandals with a heel strap are ok)
  • Hydrate yourself:  Bring some cool water to keep yourself going through the workshop.
  • I have some cooling towels that you are free to use on the back of your neck in case the summer heat asserts itself 😉

Please submit the above form as the classes fill up fast and are limited to 6 students.  PayPal is accepted / credit cards are easily accepted through “Square” (preferred) and will finalize your registration!  Encaustic class cancellations must be made 2 weeks prior to the workshop.  All PayPal refunds will be redeposited into your PayPal account.  Refunded money may take up to 7 business days to appear in your bank account depending on payment method and bank processing.  If you’ve registered for the workshop and don’t show up (have not cancelled within 2 weeks) your payment will be retained.

University Art has a parking lot – thank goodness!  There is also a Safeway and Starbucks down the road on San Carlos & Meridian.
