“Intro to Encaustic” Encaustic workshop August 10

August 10 @ 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

$195

Tide Pool

Welcome to the wonderful world of wax!

This is going to be an exciting hands-on introduction to the most magical of mediums: encaustic.  In this 1-day workshop we will be covering the basics of encaustic painting including information about materials, tools, safety and studio set-up.  This workshop is limited to only four students so you will have plenty of one-on-one support. We will not be working towards a “completed painting” in this workshop; the emphasis will be on familiarizing ourselves with the application of the wax by creating multiple sample boards.  In addition to having painted a handful of encaustic creations, you will walk away with an understanding of why this medium is so alluring (and I warn you, addicting!) There will be a 45-minute meal break mid-workshop.

So what is included in the workshop?

  • R&F Encaustic Paint:  I have a rainbow array of colors that you can use.  This includes metallics.  If you see a color that you like in my collection I am more than happy to get it melted for you.
  • R&F Encaustic Medium:  I’ve got the medium melted and ready to go!
  • Tools:  Brushes, incising tools, scrapers, rubber tools, scissors, etc….
  • The Heat:  You WILL learn how to paint with fire!  Iwatani torches are available for you to use.
  • Safe working environment:  Limited seating offers you elbow room to spread out.  You get a whole table to yourself!  Galvanized sheet metal at each table provides a safe work space.  And oh yes, the classroom is ventilated!

Most of the materials are included but I am including a small list of things you should bring as well:

  • 4 boards of various sizes (around 5×7 or 6×6 is ideal.  You may bring 1 larger panel 8×10 or 8×8)
    • Ampersand EncausticBords are good, so are cradled birch panels
    • NO CANVAS BOARDS OR STRETCHED CANVAS, NO MASONITE, NO PLYWOOD, NOTHING GESSOED WITH ACRYLIC GESSO
    • Additional boards are available for purchase in the store if needed
  • Bottled water, snacks and lunch (It is very important to hydrate yourself with encaustic)
    • I ask students to please eat outside of the classroom to get some fresh air. Drinks are fine inside the classroom.  There is a Starbucks across the street and restaurants within walking distance from the store.
  • Notebook & pencil for taking notes
  • Appropriate attire and a great attitude: long hair tied back in ponytail, no flip flops, avoid loose-fitting “flowy” clothes.  Be prepared to learn and have fun!

How to stay cool in the classroom:

It can get pretty toasty in the classroom during the summer.  Even though we have air conditioning, sometimes it’s not as cool as we would like so here are some tips to keep cool in class!

  • Wear clothes that are comfortable and can “breathe” – this includes shoes.  When your feet are cool, your body feels a little cooler (avoid flip flops or any shoes that you might trip on.  Sandals with a heel strap are ok)
  • Hydrate yourself:  Bring some cool water to keep yourself going through the workshop.
  • I have some cooling towels that you are free to use on the back of your neck in case the summer heat asserts itself 😉
