Start the week off with a burst of creativity!
This new Monday evening class offers a fresh look at collage and mixed media with a strong emphasis on acrylics. Each class will open with an informative demo on materials and technique. Throughout the course we will explore new, creative possibilities with bold colors, fluid and gel mediums, inks, acrylic grounds and decorative papers. Strengthen your painting’s “narrative voice” with found objects and personal introspection. We all have our unique artistic journey and road blocks. With group and individual coaching, I will help to stretch your creative limits.
Whether you’re a traditional landscape painter, portrait artist, representational pastelist, watercolorist, sculptor or plein-air extraordinaire, come and learn a new technique and experiment with acrylic and mixed media! It’s always fun to learn something new and create a unique work of art.
Open to all experience levels.
Sept 12: What’s it all about?
Welcome to class! We will cover basic tools and materials, discuss class themes and individual directions. Get inspired, rip up paper, grab your brush and start creating.
Sept 19: Hot Stuff
Reds, magentas, warm oranges and fiery tones will be the emphasis this evening. How can I make a painting “heat up”?
Sept 26: Art of a Whimsical Nature
Animals with attitude, paper with polka dots, and silly self-portraits. This is the seriously “non-serious” class. We’ll discuss how important a narrative is and how to truly teach your art to “speak”.
Oct 3: All that Glitters
Follow the yellow brick road to this week’s class and experiment with gold leaf and metallic papers. Warm and cool yellow, glittery gold and muted ochre: what is the difference and how can we use them?
Oct 10: Abstraction in Action
“The real joy in painting an abstract is in enjoying the fun you have along the journey.”

Creating an abstract or “non-representational” piece of art can be a two-way street: overanalyzed and over-worked or an intuitive and natural progression through the artistic process. I emphasize that this class is not about the end result, but the path you take to get there.
Oct 17: Go Green!
Natural, organic and recycled materials join forces with the power of green to truly inspire and create.
Oct 24: Blast From the Past
Art nouveau, forties flappers, jitterbug and jive, pop art and paisley, disco divas, and break-dancing beats. Tonight we will take a brief look back in time and draw inspiration from this century’s cultural and artistic movements.

Nov 7: Got the Blues?
Sunny skies, bluebirds, irises, overcast oceans, celestial indigo, blue velvet and a cold spotlight; the language of blue is diverse. Tonights emphasis will be creating a mood using fluid acrylic inks and pouring mediums combined with one of my favorite tools, gravity.
Nov 14: Heavy Metal
Copper tacks, oxidized iron, a pair of cufflinks, steel wool and throw in a skeleton key. How does it all work? Tonight we will get down and dirty with thick, strong textures, rustic reds and contrasting aqua patinas. I’ll bring the power tools!
Nov 21: Lost & Found: What “Wood” You Do?
Ticket stubs, a game of jacks, faded photos and even an old handkerchief can speak volumes. We will create strong visual narratives using an array of deep, earthy browns and delicate neutrals, ageing techniques, rustic wood and a little personal history.
